About the Nurse Honor Guard

The Nurse Honor Guard of Northern California is a distinguished group of nurse and nursing student volunteers dedicated to honoring the lives and careers of nurses and nursing students. Our mission is to pay tribute to their unwavering commitment to care and compassion, reflecting the values of the Nursing community.

The Nursing Honor Guard of Northern California was established to recognize the individuals who have dedicated their professional lives to nursing. The honor guard will pay tribute to any nurse or student nurse at different milestones (graduation, retirement, end of life, and funeral/memorial services). Services are performed by members of the Nursing Honor Guard and are offered free of charge.

Our Mission

To honor and celebrate nurses and nursing students by recognizing their dedication, compassion, and service through ceremonies and programs that uphold dignity, respect, and inclusivity.

Our Vision

To be a trusted and compassionate organization where the contributions of every nurse and nursing student are valued, remembered, and celebrated, fostering a culture of respect and recognition in healthcare and the community.

What the Nurse Honor Guard Does

The Nurse Honor Guard provides dignified ceremonial tributes that honor nurses at meaningful moments throughout their professional journey. Our ceremonies recognize a lifetime of compassion, service, and dedication to the nursing profession.

Nurse Honor Guard Tribute

A Nurse Honor Guard Tribute honors the life and service of a deceased nurse or nursing student. Conducted by fellow nurses, the ceremony may include a formal procession, recognition of service, symbolic presentation, and the Release of Duty Tribute, marking the conclusion of the nurse’s earthly service with honor and respect.

Tributes typically last 5–10 minutes and are designed to blend seamlessly into memorial or funeral services.

Additional Ceremonies and Activities

  • Pinning Ceremonies – Welcoming new nurses into the profession

  • Retirement Ceremonies – Honoring a lifetime of service

  • Living Tributes – Recognizing nurses for their impact and dedication

  • Community Engagement and Advocacy – Engage and advocate within our community to promote health, equity, and meaningful connections.

History of the Nurse Honor Guard

The Nurses Honor Guard began in 2003 by the Kansas State Nurses Association. The goal was to create an honor guard for nurses to recognize an individual’s career-long dedication to nursing and to pay respect at the end of a nurse’s life. The idea was based on a similar service to what the military, police, and firefighters perform for their fallen colleagues. For a long time, it was a service not offered anywhere else. Gradually nurses began to see this at conferences they attended, and a handful of groups started around the country. In 2011 one of those nurses attended a conference in Detroit, Michigan and brought the concept back to her Professional Practice group in Lansing, Michigan. Julia Godby Murray, RN saw her presentation and decided to share this practice all over the country. She slowly began reaching out to groups through social media. In 2023, she has organized over 250 local chapters and new groups are forming at a rapid rate.
